A remake of an Asian movie of the same name, Bangkok Dangerous is directed by the original film’s sibling helmers, Danny and Oxide Pang. Nicolas Cage sleep-walks through his role as Joe, a world-weary, loner assassin who heads to Thailand to perform the textbook “one last job.” As an English-speaking white man in Bangkok, Joe finds himself the proverbial fish out of water. His mission is to carry out a handful of contract killings on behalf of crimelord Surat, after which he will retire. As almost every other hitman movie has taught us, nothing ever goes according to plan for an assassin.

Joe hires a petty street criminal named Kong (Shahkrit Yamnarm) to assist him — and to cover his own tracks. Joe eventually takes a shine to Kong and becomes his mentor. Meanwhile, Joe also finds himself falling for a local woman, the mute pharmacist Fon (Charlie Yeung). But danger is closing in on Joe and he finds his newfound relationships threatened by his deadly line of work.

Bangkok Dangerous is riddled with as many genre clich?s as it is bullets. There’s the loner hitman who cannot allow himself any attachments (romantic or otherwise). That’s because he has four rules that he lives by, which he will, of course, break one by one as the story proceeds. That’s fine, though, because this is his last job and then he’s going to walk away. Hopefully, the hitman’s lover won’t find out what he really does for a living because losing her would rob him of his one last shot at redemption or a normal life. The hitman can’t quit his trade, however, until he takes on a pupil (who reminds him of his younger self) and mentors him in his dark art.

There’s simply nothing new or fresh in this story (or even in the original), save for the addition of a deaf-mute character. The original film was at least more interesting because the protagonist rather than the love interest was a deaf-mute; instead, Cage’s hitman is just a mopey man of few words. This isn’t meant to be offensive, but is a pharmacist really the best or wisest occupation for someone who can neither hear nor speak? Seeing Joe struggling to communicate with Fon just to get some bandages and antiseptic ointment makes one wonder what would happen if someone was asking for something of a more life and death nature.

It’s tough to buy Joe’s attachments to Kong or Fon, as well as Kong’s relationship with burlesque girl Aom (Panward Hemmanee), when there’s so much connective tissue missing from the narrative. Joe and Fon fall in love in no time, as do Kong and Aom. Also, Kong buys a stripper a piece of jewelry and we’re supposed to believe she’s really, truly in love with him now?! Gold digger alert! Kong and Aom are crucial to the last act and yet so little time is spent fleshing out their relationship that it’s a missed opportunity.

And for an assassin who prides himself on stealth, Joe engages in an over-the-top Moonraker-like gondola chase/action sequence that could have been completely avoided had he just capped his target when he was on land rather than while stuck in the water and surrounded by throngs of witnesses. That’s just one of the many befuddling and silly things about this slow-moving and sour remake
