Sick of life as a struggling musician, composer Gabriel decides to get a real job–a decision that is frowned upon by his bohemian sculptor father. With a checkered employment history, he runs into a former classmate who offers him a job in the funeral business. A crew of Reapers, whose job is to gather souls of people who are about to die, find themselves confronted by change, as their habitual meeting place Der Waffle Haus burns down on the same day that their boss and head reaper, Rube, disappears (having “gotten his lights”). They soon meet their new boss, Cameron Kane (Henry Ian Cusick), a slick businessman who died falling from the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
