The story opens with King capturing and throwing from a fifth story window Billy Joel Hill (Mark Collie), a madman who had used timed explosive devices implanted in his victim’s bodies. King and his partner Detective Storm Anderson (Chris Thomas King) then begin investigating another local serial killer, Lazereus (Michael Filipowich), known by the press as “The Grifter,” a pervert with delusions of grandeur who murders prostitutes and leaves cryptographic clues involving zodiac signs on and in their bodies. Richard Widmark’s bravura debut as snickering gangster Tommy Udo, and particularly his infamous encounter with an old woman in a wheelchair, enjoys such pop cachet that the movie itself has been somewhat underrated. More’s the pity. Henry Hathaway’s third entry in 20th Century–Fox’s series of post–WWII thrillers is just about the best of the bunch. These films incorporated the semidocumentary techniques and wondrously persuasive on-location shooting Hollywood learned from Italian neorealism and the wartime filming of some of its own best directors. Kiss of Death is more fictional than documentary in thrust, with a solid script by ace screenwriters Ben Hecht and Charles Lederer. But that only makes its imaginative, atmospheric use of real places and spaces–e.g., a superb opening robbery sequence in a New York skyscraper–the more remarkable.

Description:

The story tells the investigation started by symbolist Robert Langdon and a good-looking cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, around the murder of a Museum Louvre’s curator. In fact, the unfortunate murdered man was Sophie’s grandfather, and the corpse was found with a series of symbols and codes, like a pentagram and a Fibonacci number sequence. But police detective Fache will begin to chase Langdon, who escapes after receiving a warning about the captain’s real intentions. Sophie has with her a kind of key with dots and number 24 engraved on it, which opens to her and Langdon a big complex investigation that involves a supposedly heretic theory: Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene were, in fact, a couple who produced a daughter named Sara.
