As a nominated finalist in the 2009 annual Independent Games Festival, you wouldn’t expect Zeno Clash to play it safe, even if it does conform to the darling genre of this generation. And what better way to break a taboo or two by introducing us to Father-Mother, a lanky hermaphrodite who has apparently sired a primeval village of children through implied asexual reproduction, before protagonist Ghat commits patri-matricide and is ostracised by his murderous siblings. Despite the outlandish background to Zeno Clash we get the impression that, in the effort to produce a commercially viable game, Chilean developer ACE Team weren’t letting their imaginations run quite as wild as they’d like. Core gameplay is a comfortably familiar first-person brawler, with simple but superbly executed bobbing, weaving and counters that turn what could have been a button-masher into a fairly tactical game against multiple opponents. Underpinned by Valve’s Source Engine, a combination of blurring effects for concussion, ragdoll and a first-person perspective of Ghat picking himself off the ground after being knocked flat is a visceral part of the combat experience. Timing proves crucial, especially against some of the blubbery lumps who favour a charge attack against your scrawny frame, but land a good counter or running elbow and you’ll send a dazed enemy skyward before they hit the dirt.
